How each tool fits the job
1. Start with the right wire
Marine wire is stranded and each strand is tinned, so moisture that wicks into the insulation does not corrode the copper. Size it for the load and the round-trip length; a pump at the far end of a long run needs a heavier gauge than the same pump next to the battery. Keep three gauges aboard and you can cover most small-boat circuits.
2. Strip cleanly, crimp with a ratchet
Use the stripper notch that matches the wire so no strands are cut. Slide heat shrink on first if you are using tubing. Push the wire fully into the connector and crimp with the ratcheting tool until it releases; that click is the difference between a crimp that survives vibration and one that works loose in a season.
3. Seal every splice
Adhesive-lined connectors shrink with a heat gun until the glue flows out the ends. That seal is what makes the connection marine grade. A lighter works in an emergency but scorches the sleeve and rarely melts the adhesive evenly.
4. Fuse the new circuit at the source
Every added load needs its own fuse as close to the battery or bus as practical, sized to protect the wire. A sealed inline holder keeps the fuse contacts dry. Write the fuse rating on the holder and in your wiring notes so the next person does not guess.
5. Test before you close it up
Check voltage at the load with everything on. A DC clamp meter shows what the circuit really draws and is the fastest way to find a parasitic drain that flattens the battery overnight. Log the reading so you can compare later.

Frequently asked questions
What wire gauge does my boat need?
It depends on the current and the length of the run out and back. As a rule, small lights and electronics use 16 AWG, pumps and larger accessories 14 or 12 AWG, and anything heavy or long-run 10 AWG or larger. Check an ABYC-style ampacity chart for the exact number.
Are automotive crimp connectors OK on a boat?
They will work for a while. Above deck in a dry console they may last; below deck or near the bilge, moisture gets in and the copper turns green. Adhesive-lined heat-shrink connectors cost a little more and remove the problem.
Why did my new circuit blow its fuse right away?
Either the fuse is undersized for the load, or there is a short. Check the draw with a clamp meter and confirm the fuse rating protects the wire, not the device. Never fit a larger fuse to stop it blowing.
Do I need a heat gun or will a lighter do?
A small heat gun is inexpensive and shrinks connectors evenly without soot. Keep a lighter as the backup you hope not to use.
